Housekeeping Tips for a Spooktacular Halloween

Housekeeping Tips for a Spooktacular Halloween

When you’re as passionate about housekeeping as we are at Maid Right, Halloween can be a funny time. Fake cobwebs? Rubber spiders? Call us sticklers for spotless home, but decorations like these definitely give us goosebumps.

Kidding aside, it’s a blast to dress up your home every Halloween, especially if you’re doing it with the kids. Of course, you don’t want your home to still look scary even after you’ve taken the decorations down. So follow these simple Halloween housekeeping tips to make cleaning up on November 1st easy on yourself.

Choose Wall-Friendly Decorations

We’ve all been there. The package said the adhesive wouldn’t damage your wall. But when you take your decorations down, your wall’s paint has more blemishes than a moth-eaten costume. Even a ghost couldn’t make you shriek so loud!

To avoid this nightmare, make sure to test any tape or self-adhering decorations beforehand on an area where damage won’t be noticed. Leave the tape or decoration up for 24-48 hours before testing removal to make sure long-term use won’t leave damage.

Protect Your Floors from Halloween Mess

Some of the most fun parts of Halloween also happen to be the messiest. To avoid a housekeeping catastrophe, make sure that messy activities are in easy-to-clean or protected areas.

If you’re carving pumpkins, put down plastic to save yourself the headache of cleaning stuck-on pumpkin pulp and seeds. And if your kids come home from trick-or-treating and want to have a chocolate bar (or seven), make sure they aren’t dumping out their treat bags on your carpet.

Keep Your Porch or Front Step Safe

If you’re expecting costumed visitors this October 31st, it’s important that you make sure your porch or front step is safe for trick-or-treating traffic. Remember that a lot of kids will be wearing costumes with trailing capes, bulky accessories, or ill-fitting eyeholes. That means being extra-careful in your preparations.

One of the most common mistakes is putting tripping hazard decorations close to walkways or on the corners of steps. This is particularly a problem with Jack-O-Lanterns — especially if they’re lit by candles.
