THE WORST CLEANING ADVICE WE’VE EVER HEARD

We’ve been in the cleaning business for a long time. And when you’re in the cleaning business for a long time, you hear a lot of bad advice. We’re offering a better alternative to some of the most popular cleaning myths on the market.

  1. “Windex cleans anything.”
Why this is wrong: Windex cannot be used on screens! It will completely ruin your computer and TV screens. While Windex does clean your glass and offers a product that is suitable for countertops, it will damage your tech screens.
What to use instead: Try eyeglass cleaner with a microfiber cloth.
  2. “Use nail polish remover to remove permanent marker or sticky residue.”
Why this is wrong: Nail polish remover is made with acetone, which is powerful enough to strip the finish right off your wood.
What to use instead: There’s no one-size-fits-all solution here, but we would recommend a cleaner like Amodex meant for ink stains, and proper research to ensure what you use doesn’t damage your wood finish or upholstery.
  3. “Pour water on carpet stains.”
Why this is wrong: Water is an ineffective solution to eliminate stains on your carpet, and you run the risk of rotting the floorboards underneath.
What to use instead: There are several DIY recipes for carpet cleaner and reputable carpet cleaning products on the market. Just treat the stain ASAP with something more useful than water.
  4. “You can mix baking soda with vinegar.”
Why this is wrong: Just because you create a fizzy chemical reaction doesn’t mean you’re creating a powerful cleaning solution. Really, you’re just creating a mixture of carbon dioxide gas and salt water. While the reaction itself can be useful, don’t use the leftover solution to try and clean.
What to use instead: Independently, both baking soda and vinegar are useful cleaning tools! They’re just stronger when they aren’t together.

But above all, the worst advice we hear stems from a sense of obligation to the DIY-spirit.

  1. “I should do this all myself.”
